Airport Operation Specialist II

 

This job is 40 hours per week, includes seasonal evening and weekend work due to snow removal

and working diversions (explained at interview),

NATURE OF WORK

 

This position combines skilled work in the operation of heavy maintenance equipment and general labor and maintenance work.

 

Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction equipment.  This class is distinguished from classes at a lower level in that employees in this class must operate such equipment as forklifts, tandem axle trucks (ie dump trucks, plow trucks, etc), Case Tractors and Broce brooms, etc as a regular assignment.  Employees may perform general laboring duties on a variety of construction type activities as well as light electrical duties, and may supervise employees assigned as helpers.  Supervision is received by Airport Operations Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

​​

  • Operate Broce broom (or similar), dump truck, snow equipment, plowing snow, clearing parking lot and other large equipment maintenance functions; change various equipment attachments including snow plow, sander, and snowblades blades/mower blades, etc.

  • Operate all types of rotary mowers when mowing grasses and weeds.

  • Perform general laboring duties in connection with assigned projects; may supervise subordinate employees engaged in general labor and equipment operation on an assigned project; utilize two-way radio to maintain communication with office, supervisor and/or other airport personnel.

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment operated including checking and changing oil, oil filters, fueling and washing equipment, checking other fluid levels, lubricating, inspecting and changing tires, and related maintenance work.

  • Complete daily logs and reports noting maintenance performed, materials and used and/or tasks completed; maintain shop area and shop equipment; monitor runway conditions on airport; attend routine safety and staff meetings, as required.  

  • Maintain and complete minor repairs on plumbing fixtures including leaking faucets, clogged drains, toilets, pipes, valves, drinking fountains and other related plumbing fixtures; complete minor repairs and replacements on electrical fixtures and equipment including airport terminal runway and lights, switches, outlets, fuses, bulbs, emergency light systems and other related electrical components.

  • Perform minor carpentry and building maintenance work including priming and painting walls; patching holes and repairing plaster; cleaning/exchanging heating and air conditioning filters.

  • Perform general grounds maintenance work including mowing of runways and taxiways, roadways and surrounding grassland areas utilizing commercial mowing and trimming equipment; prune bushes and trees; remove snow using hand snow blowers.

  • Operate tractor loaders and other heavy equipment to perform runway repair maintenance activities and remove snow from runways, taxiways and parking lot with large snow removal equipment.

  • Operate firefighting equipment and vehicles as needed; clean, wash and perform minor vehicle maintenance; determine proper work methods and materials required for each project; attend firefighting and safety training as assigned; we are a mutual aid member as such all employees will assist in mutual aid fires as assigned. 

  • Maintain fire station and airport terminal buildings by means of the following activities:  sweep, vacuum, mop and buff floors; wash ceilings, woodwork and windows; dust furniture, counter-tops and related items; strip and wax floors; clean and sanitize restrooms; clean light fixtures; empty wastebaskets and ashtrays and move furniture and prepare facility space for meetings and community events.

  • Assist in conducting inventory of supplies and equipment for airport terminal and fire station; ensure facility security as appropriate.

  • We are a diversionary station for United Airlines (along with other airlines).  In inclement weather planes are sent to our airport day or night.  We have to be ready to handle all aspects of the planes needs or to see that they are handled.  This is seasonal work, spring and summer normally.  Employees must be available for call out when needed.

  • Answer questions and provide directions to general public accessing airport services.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance characteristics of heavy construction equipment.

  • Considerable knowledge of the operating hazards, and of the safety rules and precautions, applicable to the equipment being operated.

  • Ability to detect needed repairs and to make minor field repairs and adjustments to service equipment.

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to work with limited supervision in the performance of regular working duties.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, equipment, and materials utilized in a variety of building maintenance and craft disciplines.

  • Knowledge of the work standards and safe work practices associated with building maintenance and craft disciplines.

  • Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, procedures and materials and the operation and care of various types of cleaning equipment.

  • Ability to inspect and determine the extent of needed repair for electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical and other systems.

  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools and equipment utilized in a variety of craft disciplines.

  • Skill in the operation and routine maintenance of cleaning, mowing, firefighting and heavy construction equipment.

  • Skill in the operation of heavy-duty construction and maintenance equipment.

  • Ability to run snow removal equipment.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

 

Graduation from a senior high school or equivalent and experience in the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Completion of high school and some experience in the operation of heavy construction maintenance equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills.  

 

Employees of Western Nebraska Regional Airport shall become a member of the Western Nebraska Regional Airport Fire Department.   It is a condition of employment that said employee meets all training requirements as required by State and Federal law.

REQUIREMENTS

​

  • Knowledge of basic tools with practical

  • Knowledge in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting and carpentry fields

  • Experience in operations of Heavy Equipment (ie, tractor loaders, dump truck, fire equipment and other heavy equipment)

  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions

  • Ability to perform physical duties indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Must meet all requirements of and be active with the Airport Fire Department and respond as needed.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

​

Possession of a valid Nebraska driver’s license.  Can pass the required Drug/Alcohol test and required background check.

​

​

Salary to commensurate with experience.  

​

Background check is mandatory and a drug test will be required. Benefit Package. EOE.
